Survival is a balance,
not a single meter.

Thirst, hunger, energy, temperature, pain, stress, wounds, nutrition, weather, water, food condition, and shelter interact. A decision that solves one problem can deepen another.

Water solves thirst but creates exposure

Use E when the contextual prompt confirms that your lion can drink. Water levels change with season, heat, rain, drought, river behavior, and long-running world simulation. Some sources can become contaminated, while deeper water slows movement, prevents deep-water sprinting, creates wakes, and can increase noise or risk.

Water also concentrates activity. Herds, rivals, scavengers, roads, settlements, and conservation pressure can overlap near a source. Approach with enough energy to leave, and do not begin drinking while the local context still shows an immediate threat.

Movement spends a limited reserve

Walking preserves more energy than sprinting. Shift-run is valuable for a final chase, escape, urgent crossing, or territorial response, but sustained speed increases energy loss and can worsen heat pressure. Slopes and difficult ground add their own movement cost.

Low energy affects more than travel. An exhausted lion may be unable to strike, and physical condition can change movement, attack strength, healing, and risk. A failed chase therefore costs future options as well as the distance already covered.

Temperature changes the price of activity

The HUD reports temperature, weather, season, wind, and water level. Heat waves, dry seasons, drought, time of day, shelter, movement, and water all change the condition around the lion. Cooler hours can make a long pursuit less punishing, while daytime sprinting can combine heat and energy loss quickly.

Weather also changes the rest of the system: rain affects scent, wet ground affects movement and tracks, drought shrinks water, and extreme events alter regions, populations, and shelter value.

Food has ownership, freshness, and consequences

Carcasses are finite. They decompose, lose nutritional value, can become contaminated, attract scavengers, and may carry pride ownership. Feeding restores hunger and nutrition, but remaining at a carcass can create competition, social resentment, disease exposure, or a dangerous delay.

The simulation also tracks fullness, fat, muscle, nutrition, starvation, and food-web pressure. One meal does not make condition permanent; hunting success and prey availability belong to a wider ecology that continues across the saved world.

Injury is more than lost health

Claw wounds, sprains, torn muscles, fractures, blood loss, infection, sickness, pain, and stress can change recovery and performance. Healing depends on time, hydration, nutrition, shelter, and the severity and region of the injury. Human zones can also create road collisions, fence entanglement, conflict, or—under the right conditions—ranger and veterinary intervention.

If combat or a hazard leaves the lion compromised, disengaging may be the stronger survival choice. Saving immediately after reaching a stable position preserves the actual world state; it does not erase consequences.

Rest, sleep, and shelter do different work

R rests at four-times simulation speed and accelerates recovery. Z sleeps at eight-times speed and heals faster, but nearby danger can block or interrupt sleep. F5 uses the best known local shelter when one is available. Shelter types differ in temperature relief, safety, sleep quality, concealment, disease pressure, and offspring value.

Use the Field Journal and current-region context to decide whether the fastest recovery is also safe. Before returning to the game, review wind and scent or the first-day survival sequence.
